The head of the rebel soldiers who overthrew Niger’s legitimately elected president announced on Saturday evening their commitment to restoring civilian governance in the nation within a span of three years. General Abdourahmane Tchiani refrained from providing specific details about the strategy, indicating that the framework for the transition would be established within a month.

Following his interaction with a regional delegation that aimed to mediate Niger’s ongoing crisis, Tchiani asserted, “I firmly believe that together, we will collaboratively devise a solution to overcome this challenging situation, for the betterment of all.” The delegation, led by former Nigerian head of state General Abdulsalami Abubakar and representing the ECOWAS bloc, also held separate discussions with deposed President Mohamed Bazoum. These efforts were conducted in parallel with the reconciliation initiatives led by Leonardo Santos Simao, the UN’s special representative for West Africa and the Sahel.
